What the work costs

Not doing the work costs more than doing it. We know that. We delay anyway.

Some of us are afraid of the labor. Some are afraid of failing. Some are afraid of succeeding.

The fear isn’t about the work.

The hours are the cheap part. What the work costs is the excuse, and the excuse has been good to you. It explained the last five years. It let you off. Doing the work means handing it back, and there is no version where you keep both.

That’s why we stall at the start and not in the middle. The middle is only labor.

Sit with the thing you would have to give up. Name it.

Then the work is just work.

The crowd finds it

The Millennium Bridge opened on 10 June 2000. That day 90,000 people crossed it, up to 2,000 standing on it at once, and it swayed 70 millimetres side to side.

They closed it on 12 June. Two days.

The engineering was sound. What nobody modelled was that people adjust their footing when the ground moves, and 2,000 people adjusting at once push in time with the sway.

The crowd caused the wobble. The crowd was the only thing that could have revealed it.

You could have walked ten engineers across that bridge every day for a year and found nothing.

This is the failure a pilot cannot find. Five people using the new process is not a small version of fifty people using it. Some problems are made of the scale itself, and they arrive on the day you stop testing and start operating.

It stayed shut for twenty months. The fix was 37 dampers, then 52 more, and £5 million.

Ask what your process does at full load. Not whether it works.

Dig deep to build tall

The Burj Khalifa stands 2,717 feet. Before any of it went up, 194 concrete piles were bored about 160 feet straight down.

A foundation isn’t there to hold the building up on a calm day. It’s there for the wind, and for every year after that.

Leaders want the height. A bigger team, a bigger business.

The digging is less appealing.

For a person, digging is self-analysis. Facing your own issues instead of building around them.

For a team, it’s culture. Naming the bad behavior while it’s still small enough to name.

For a business, it’s system design. The standard procedure nobody wants to write.

No one photographs the hole. The hole sets the height.
